One of the first books I ever bought to learn spanish. This book was originally written in 1955 but has been updated, revised and expanded. It really does make spanish easy to learn but you must take the time to study the book at least an hour per day. The author`s method for teaching you Spanish is very effective and impressive even by today`s standards even though it was written in the 50s. If something is good, it`s good no matter when it was made. I have read and studied many, many spanish books in my quest to become fluent and this book is the first book I would recommend to any beginner or intermediate learner and even advanced spanish students will learn plenty of spanish grammer and vocabulary here. In fact, I recently bought myself a new copy and started studying it again. I wanted to refresh myself on the lessons contained herein and I find that I am being reminded of many words and expressions that I forgot about and I am learning lots of new spanish. That`s what inspired me to write a review and tell people about this most excellent book for starting your spanish education and working your way up to fluency.
Text seems well planned (haven't gotten too far along yet!). I bought this for the kindle, so my review is on the electronic version of the book. The option to change font size does NOT work properly and if you make the font larger the display just runs out of sight. Changing the kindle to landscape helps a bit to get a larger view without each sentence running out of sight, but there are still limits to how big you can make the text. (Making the text larger is one of the best things about electronic formats - if your eyes are tired you can still read!) I was a bit disappointed in this, there does not seem to be any way to scroll over and see the rest of the text if you have enlarged the font (using kindle voyage). I have tried playing with options for margins and line spacing but nothing I have done allows the font to go beyond a certain size before it just cuts off the end of all the sentences of the page (instead of moving them down so you can continue reading).
I'm a casual user of Spanish. I've used, off and on, the original paperback version of this book for over 20 years. I vacation often in Mexico and have recently been to Spain. I'm comfortable with its "dialogue" format. I feel that I'm learning the language - not just picking up phrases to use in certain situations. I've tried Rosetta Stone and prefer this to merely parroting sounds. It's mix of dialogue, vocabulary, grammar and syntax has built, I feel, insight into the workings of the language which has generalized to a comprehension and familiarity beyond the book's lesson plans. I've received compliments from native Spanish speakers on my comprehension, pronunciation and skill regarding verb tenses.
This item was used - I knew that - but it was said to be "used-very good". I would disagree with the assessment because the spine is heavily worn, the cover is heavily worn and there are markings in red pencil and regular pencil throughout the book. In addition, there were quite a few scraps of paper in the book and an automobile decal as if the book had never even been looked at for evaluation. I had used the "Italian Made Simple" book years earlier, and this is why I wanted the "Spanish Made Simple" book of the series. It is a good language book, but it was more like "used-acceptable".
This is a good text for learning Spanish rapidly. The lessons are clear and well-organized. So far (I am on lesson 28 of 49), I find that each lesson takes from an hour and a half to two hours to go through, writing out all the exercises and practicing the dialogue out loud as directed. I am brushing up long-forgotten Spanish, and I also have a background in French, so it may take a brand new learner a bit longer to complete each lesson. I recommend spending a few days reviewing the material and practicing the vocabulary before proceeding to the next lesson.I have found, however, that there are several errors in the answer section...which is rather disconcerting when you are trying to learn something new. This text has been revised, and some of the answers may have been based on questions in an earlier edition, but they certainly should have been revised along with the text. Most of the errors are obvious and do not have to do with vocabulary or grammar...just with the content of the dialogue...a picture is now hanging over a bookcase, not the piano...that sort of thing. It's a bit annoying when your correct answer does not agree with the book. That's just sloppy on the editor's part.
I took Spanish lessons last year, and the instructor recommended this book. I thought it was a kind of workbook, with exercises I could do to help me remember.Turns out most of the lessons say memorize these words.That’s not what I need! I need more of a Duolingo kind of practice. Sitting around trying to memorize is not the best way to learn a new language.Waste f time and money.
I'm using this book in conjunction with the Pimslur Spanish 3 CDs, and am finally making progress in my quest to learn this beautiful language. This book presents interesting dialogues followed by progressive grammar lessons and exercises. I'm using this book in a class which provides the invaluable added experience of forcing you to use what you are learning thru speaking to others, so I highly recommend taking a class if at all possible. I would love to be able to just listen to tapes and absorb it all, but in my experience, you have to go thru the tedium of learning tenses and this book has helped make the process less tedious... Even enjoyable!
I purchased this book because it was recommended by my instructor. It is helpful and I like the exercises in it. I am not a beginner and have skipped over some parts, but, I have learned some from this book.
