The bulk of the pieces in this collection can be played by a pianist of intermediate abilities (a nice gift from the composer Dave Brubeck). If you listen to the Nocturnes recording played by John Salmon, you WILL notice he improvises away from the score of each piece in this anthology (or, at minimum, improvises noticeably on SOME of them). But, overall, you can make these miniatures delightful even if you play them literally as is from the score. They are delicate, they are nuanced, they are often sparse and arguably simple. They are really little gems by the genius of a legend, Dave Brubeck.
These Nocturnes grab the heart and soul of any passionate piano player. Thanks ever so much for making the digital version available.
Brubeck's music is a fusion of classical and jazz composition. He is readily understandable by those untrained in music. This particular group of pieces are easy to play, yet don't sound like baby pieces.
Can't say enough good about this book. Thoroughly playable as is, and it sets a great foundation without having to turn pages for creating your own arrangement of each of these fabulous tunes!
I enoy it very much. I find it musically pleasing. It starts simply; then develops into more complex compositions. I recommend it for anyone interested in learning about Dave Brubeck's music.
